Welcome to Points East!
At this century-old home on the eastern edge of the Atlantic you can relax in a cozy environment filled with a collection of Newfoundland writing, music and art. Consider this your retreat from everyday stress. The guesthouse/B&B, which during off-season (October-May) is available for workshops and retreats, includes four double bedrooms, two baths, comfortable seating areas and a full kitchen. Meals are offered on request. You have access to the porch, garden and hobby farm with goats and chickens that recreate a sense of the traditional lifestyle of the fishing families that occupied this special place in the past.
From the doorstep experience the views, sounds and smells of the ocean. Depending on the time of the year, watch whales, seabirds, icebergs passing by. A walk along this rugged coast is sure to blow away any cobwebs. Sea air is said to have an abundance of healthy negative ions, created by the crashing waves, which balance the serotonin levels in the brain to give your mood a real boost. Nothing is more effective than a sea view to cut stress levels. "The sea is a natural view - it remains as it would have looked hundreds of years ago. We originally came from the sea and it rouses primordial feelings in us. The mystery and awe it inspires makes us feel smaller when we look at it, giving us a great sense of perspective, especially when we're feeling stressed." (From COAST - living by the sea, March/April 2006, quote by Phillip Hodson, p.111).
Get to know the traditional outport (fishing village) Pouch Cove with its dramatic rocky coastline surrounded by woods and hills covered with blueberries, a place where time has - almost - stood still, where the lifestyle tends to be slow-paced, quiet and friendly. Painters and writers come here to be inspired. You will be the first to see the sunrise in this most easterly community of North America.
From here hike the northern end of the scenic East Coast Trail with the help of maps and information provided by your host, who is one of the founding members of this over 400 km long coastal trail, which attracts hikers from all over the world. Please see website www.trailconnections.ca for details on our hiking program.
From October to May Points East guesthouse is available for workshops and retreats. Other facilities in the vicinity can be used to accommodate larger group activities, such as yoga exercises. We are in the process of establishing a Healing Center that will focus on healthy living, natural foods, exercise and energy work. Guest speakers on related topics are welcome. Please check the sections on "Retreats and Workshops" for details on future events.
